Can you tell me a true South African "spookstorie"?
It's almost Halloween and my kids as well as the students in my afternoon classes are pestering me to tell them something scary with South Africa as background. Can you help me out? And this is a fun question, guys. No need for any sarcastic answers.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!! You request for no sarcastic comments prohibits you from telling how INCREDIBLY scary it will be if OOM JACOB takes over. On a slightly more serious note, East Coast Radios sometimes retells SA urban legends and spookstories. I suggest you have a look at their website too.

DITTO ON dWali'S FIRST ANSWER! BUT YOU CAN ALSO LOOK ON THE WEBSITE www.ruff.co.za. POST AN E-MAIL ON THE SITE AND ASK THEM TO HELP YOU. YOU CAN ALSO GO TO www.woes.co.za (THE AFRIKAANS VERSION OF ruff) and ask them. THE SOUTH AFRICANS ARE VERY PROUD TO SHARE THEIR CULTURE WITH ANYONE AND I AM SURE THAT THEY WILL GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO HELP YOU. UNFORTUNATELY WITH TELEVISION ETC. "SPOOKSTORIES" ARE DYING OUT. THESE STORIES WERE TOLD TO OUR PARENTS ETC, AROUND A FLAME ON THE BOER FARMS OF YESTERYEAR. GOOD LUCK! NADIA.

I know of one spookstorie...there's this one deserted road going out from Meyerton to somewhere else (whoopsy, dnno where to) but anywho, apparently a ghost of a woman and her child haunt that road at night!! I think she was killed horribly back in the days...like a while after the Voortrekker days!! But there's a bend in the road and she sits on a rock there...my mom and pa both said they've seen her!! I wanted to see it too, but my ma said no!! From the sounds of it, this ghost sounds eeevillllll!! Tell them about how Dingane killed Shaka....oh wait, what about that mountain in KZN (dang, i also dunno what the name is...wait, I've just found it-it's Ghost Mountain), but the mountain gets all misty and people have been said to see flickering lights on the mountain!! Hey, I just rememebered I have a book of eerie things that have happened in SA...let me go find that book quick!! I'm back...hey, what about the Macrorie House in Pietermaritzburg?? My answe's gonna be long...so I'll mail you another FREAKY story...it's freaks the bananas out of me!!
4 :
Hi Porgie. I know you're out of the country, but there is a book that CJ Langenhoven wrote, that is a collection of SA spook stories. He travelled all around the "Ou Kaap" interviewing people and collecting theses stories, see if you can find out anything about that online. I have loads of stories, I'll tell you some. Well first there is the "Spook van Uniondale" there's actually a song about her (Blommetjie gedenk aan my) She is a girl who died on a cross road near there on a Easter weekend. Many people who have driven on the old road on Easter have reported seeing a young women hitch hike there, shortly after seeing her, motorists report feeling their cars getting colder inside and smelling apple blossoms, motorcyclists report feeling the weight of someone getting on the bike and holding on around their waist. Rumour has it that her soul is trying to escape this crossing. Then of course there is the tokoloshe, he can not be forgotten. There are so many stories of people who reported to have seen him, or to have had things happen to them with clues leading to the tokoloshe. As a small child I was very scared of this little monster, it sounds silly now, but I use to worry that he was hiding under my bed. Here is one from Langenhoven's book, it originally in Afrikaans, and was called "Die vrou voor die hek", but for the sake of all the readers I'll write in English. Once at the turn of the century there was a young man in the Cape who lived on a farm. (I cant remember his name or where it precisely was, but this is true) He went to go visit a young women who he was inlove with on a farm about half a day away ("Om te gaan opsit".) That night when the opsit kers burned out, as tradition had it, he didnt stay the night, but instead got on his horse and faced the journey home. He rode for many hours in the dark, before realizing that he is lost. As he was riding he saw a deserted farmhouse in the distance and decided to go there. But as he approached the front gate his horse wouldnt go nearer. He looked up and saw a women standing at the gate holding both her hands up, as if forbiding him to enter, and his horse wouldnt go nearer, so he couldnt even go talk to her. Eventually he went on his way in the darkness. He came to a fork in the road, and the scene repeated itself. His horse was spooked and wouldnt go down the one road, he looked up and saw the woman holding her hands up standing some distance down the road, so he took the other road. The whole night his journey went like this with the woman appearing ahead of him, guiding him and his horse. Suddenly, a few hours before sunrise he found a small hut in a dark area near a creek. He approached and found there was a small fire, almost burned out inside, but otherwise it was quiet. He rekindled the fire, and then realised there was a dark figure in the corner of the hut. He approached, and found it was a woman cluthing a baby. The woman was dead, her body almost cold, but the baby was still alive. That night he stayed awake and kept the baby warm and alive. In the morning he dragged the women's body out to give it a proper Christian burial. When he got outside in the sunlight and looked at the body he realised with a shock that it was the body of the woman who he had seen in front of the gate and who guided him here the night before. Her soul wouldnt rest until her baby had been saved.

Well here is a "funny" one. For years and years when I went home to my parents who lives in North West; I would see a sign on the road to Rustenburg that said " Hier spook CJ van Rensburg". Translated it means the gost of CJ v Rensburg visits these parts. I must say I was very curious about this ghost and always wondered what happened and if actually there was a ghost...ehm, until I found out it was actually the name of a farm...one of the most originall names I must say, but I could only laugh...

What is life like in Johannesburg, South Africa?

What is life like in Johannesburg, South Africa?
I am a Canadian and will be getting my Bachelor of Arts degree from York University in Toronto, Canada. I have always wanted to become a teacher but I really want to move to Johannesburg (I hear it's a GREAT life out there). Is there a University with a teachers' college there? How much on average am I looking at to rent a 2 bedroom apartment? What is the cost of living like there (cable, phone, groceries, etc.)? Do you need a car over there? How does an international student get accepted into country? Thanks in advance for your help.....

It's colourful and really diverse and at times scary. You meet a lot of really beautiful and really ugly things in virtually the same place. Extreme aversion for the bad will make you miss out on the really great things Johannesburg offers. Rent should be about R4000 including utilities, outside the security of a security guard and off-street parking. You definitely need a car. There are teachers colleges appended to universities - incredibly Adult Basic Education and Training focused interestinly. The cost of living is not too bad.
2 :
A bachelors flat (studio) will cost you between R3500-R4000 so a 2 bedroomed flat should be around R6000- excl water and lights. JHB is one of the most expensive major cities in SA to live in. Property is quite pricey here but the price groceries depends on what your eating habits are like. There shall be new safer ways of travelling with the Soccer world cup coming but Metro bus is one of the safest means to get around. (A car will eventually be a necessity as you may be stranded should Metro bus go on strike). We have thousands of international students in our Universities, and we treat them as we would any of our fellow South Africans. (I've never heard of Xenophobia at any JHB university).
3 :
Johannesburg has two universities with teaching colleges, the University of Johannesburg and the Johannesburg College of Education, which is part of the university of the Witwatersrand. Rent should be about R 3000- R 5000, groceries for one person probably about R 1000, phone depends on your usage but probably about R 200 per month, and about R500 for DSTV (satellite TV, our closest equivalent to cable). You can come on a student visa after applying to the relevant institutions. And you might get by without a car if you live close to your place of study, but I would strongly recommend that you get a car. They are working on improving our public transport system, but for now it is very hard to get around with no car.
4 :
Hi there. Why Johannesburg? Also known as Gold Reef City. It is hectic. Crime is higher in Johannesburg than Cape Town and Durban. It is also spread out over a huge area. Johannesburg is big. There are teachers colleges there, but not sure of names. Why not take a look at Cape Town. There you get Cape Town university, and Teachers colleges. yes you do need a car if you stay in any of the cities. Contact Passport office in Pretoria to find out what you require to get in there. To rent a 2 bed apartment you are looking at R3000 - R5000 per month. Water/electricity is expensie. I would say R200 for electricity a month, and Water could be up to R125 or more. But good luck.

Want to immigrate from South Africa, but to where?

Want to immigrate from South Africa, but to where?
I finished school, and have been working as a receptionist/secretary for 3 years now at a book keeping company. I need to get out of this country, where can I go that isn't too difficult? I have an aunt and cousins in Australia. But I have found that immigrating there is next to impossible. (Student visa out of the question because I don't have 30 thousand dollars) Considered New Zealand but I have been told their immigration laws are just as strict as Aus. I am looking to start a new, and BETTER life as this country is very poor and anti-white, I fear for my life. Please help?

2 :
Try one of the Scandinavian countries.
3 :
go in Switzerland or Canada don't even think about to come in America
4 :
Forget about trying to immigrate to Canada. Our economy is in the toilet. We already have zillions of unemployed book keepers of our own who are looking for what few jobs there are. I understand you want to start a new and better life but the situation worldwide is no different and there are millions of others who also want a better life for themselves and their families. Stay where you are. You have a job. If you try to come to Canada, you won't have a job. Sorry but until the economy improves here, immigrating here is a very bad idea. It isn't that you wouldn't be welcome - it's just that now is a really REALLY bad time to try.
5 :
A lot of us feel the same way but I would not recommend emigrating at the moment. South Africa isn't in a recession at the moment due to our higher interest rates which they can lower to help everyone. Other countries can't do the same. Wait until the recession is over in other countries before you go. I would easily get into into Oz or NZ due to my qualifications but have no money to take along. Anyways, I'll rank the destinations like this NZ, Oz, Canada, Switzerland, Netherland, British Islands (England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland choose one). It actually depends on whether you can live in cold weather or not. I ranked NZ above Oz because Oz is becoming a desert (drought) and has too many wild fires burning everything down. They're biggest problem is water at the moment. Problem with EU countries are that they are too dependent on each other and it really is cold. If one country sneezes, all the other countries catches the cold. Thus, if one country decides to cut the gas supply, the other countries die of the cold or can't eat. Which is why Canada is better.

No. And you wouldn't want one that is. The last thing you'd want is to be stranded in a foreign country, with a bad family and have no help. Check into YFU or AFS and see if they have some help or scholarships for you.

Does anyone have successful fund-raising ideas? Or do you know any companies willing to sponsor us?
A group of grade 11 students from South Africa want to go to the St Andrew's Model United Nations (SAIMUN) conference in Dublin, Ireland next year in March. However, we need help in terms of funding. Its about $11000 for the 7 seven students. Flight and accomodation is included.

You could maybe hold a charity ball, where the guests have to pay for dinner.. You could also talk to rotary or unicef or something like that about donations. Other ideas i thought of were applying for a grant, door knocking, sponsership for a certain sport ie fun runs.
2 :
Quizz nights Dessert evenings Sell kindling Raffles Suporvised dance for teenagers Car washes Auction Sausage sizzles If the school is envolved as well you could add Mufti days if the school has a uniform Coin trails Here in New Zealand there are companies set up to help people fundraise. As in they only sell to people who are fundraising, things such as chocolates, pies, dairys/books. Maybe get in touch with groups like Rotary or JCIs if you have them in your community. If they can't sponser you they should at least have some suggestions as to what you can do.
3 :
I don't know what you have regarding your community based programs or events. I'll throw out some ideas. First off please be clear and answer the Who, What, Where, When, and Why questions in letters or posters. Advertise- The kids can make posters for donations. Write letters to officials and City Council or Mayor asking for sponsorship. Go to community events and set up a booth to sell food. Create a talent show, Dinner Night Out or sell handcrafts. As a volunteer coordinator I had the high "schoolers" do all the work for something like this by pooling their talents together. I wrote business owners requesting products like for our Teriyaki booth. They supplied rice, meat, and soy sauce. I checked everywhere to put the kids to work and taught them how to do various projects. They couldn't clean yards because of personal property. Ask the kids and others for fund raising ideas in your area. They worked hard and I was so proud. They were also proud and still think about the experiences with me even after graduating from college. When I think of projects and young people it makes me happy. Good luck to you and your kids.
4 :
What are the benefits of them going? How much does it cost both in terms of money and environmental damage with all that air travel. What are the real benefits for the wider community. Much of the United Nations is more about benefits for those working there and doing well paid jobs working for consultancies that "implement" aid projects, leaving little money to go for any tangible change Yesterday the BBC had a programme World Have Your Say where one of the ex prostitutes was saying, - the last thing we need is yet another work shop or re education programme. put the money directly in our pockets. There is a link below According to The Economist,. Save the Children recently asked some beneficiaries of one of their programmes and realised that what the victims of a disaster needed more than anything was money, not training, not wells, just cash, so that they could go on line to find loved ones, buy tickets home. Apparently they agreed (though I couldn't find any detials on their web site. What have these students done already ? The more they can demonstrate their own commitment and energy, the more likely like business guy will think, they deserve a bit of help? and send them some cash Having said that, for all I know this a great project. Many of the other answers give lots of info and good practical tips Congrats for trying to help them. Are you a member of the group or their teacher, parent, friend ? Make sure the others get to see the answers here. It should make them realise that someone has to make an effort (and it should be them) - if its you, just send em a link to this page

I enjoyed the time I spent in Australia. I expect that any of the countries would be a wonderful place to spend a year. However you need to know that high school in these places will be much tougher than what you are accustomed to in the U.S. (assuming that is where you are).

I would go to England

As you did not state where and what degree you are reading now, you might want to consider an exchange programme with a uni from another part of the world (assuming you are from the states) like Asia and Aussie. Reasons -This will give you a "global perspective" in your studies. -According to my friends from the States (contacts from work), large majority of Americans do not travel out of USA although USA seem to be spearheading globalization – Only some of the key business people travel. Hence, this might give you an edge in the job market upon graduation. Some of the recommendations (I only recommend those with very good international standing and those I am familiar with) for exchange in Asia/ Australia: Singapore: National University of Singapore: http://www.nus.edu.sg/ Nanyang Technological University: www.ntu.edu.sg Hong Kong/China: The Chinese University of Hong Kong: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/v6/en/ Australia: Any universities from the Grp of 8 (the unofficial TOP 8 universities in Aussie): http://www.go8.edu.au/ Note: I do not know which faculty you are from – hence, I only listed the universities with good overall standing – overlooking the respective faculty strength. If you prefer fast pace city life – choose Singapore (1st Lang in Singapore is English – almost everyone can speak English) or HK (1st Lang is Cantonese, but quite a fair bit of people there speaks English as well) If you prefer slower pace of life – choose Aussie . Hope this helps.

I've heard it's dirt cheap to live in places such as India and Thailand. I'm in highschool now, but when I get there, I'm interested in taking off a year from either college or grad school and I would really love to live in Africa. Do you know if Africa is inexpensive to live in? Particularly South Africa or Egypt. Thanks for your help! Please e-mail me if you have any more information or advice - christineeex4@yahoo.com

Perhaps a good program interning for a Charity or Wildlife group would give you some other folks your age to travel with. Now that you have posted your email address, you will no doubt find out Why the world is a dangerous place for a single young girl to travel. Safety is a great skill to learn if you want to travel.

For Year 11 students, having a 'talent' auction is good; instead of selling actual objects, each person or group of students comes up with a unique idea/service that they can sell; celebrity chefs, music performers, lessons in a certain skill, or just plain old housework. Then get your local community to come and purchase your skills! Or you could have a fundraising performance; if you are good at music have a 'Battle of the Bands' competition, or get your community to come to a survival of the fittest night where each student has to undertake funny tasks. Think up your own skills and play to them. Teacher versus student sporting matches are good in schools; your group can compete against a group of teachers who will help, and other students can pay to watch. Disco's are also great at lunchtimes in schools. Same with sausage sizzles and cake stalls. They may only make a few hundred dollars, but they are great for a little on the side project. Having a 'hat day' or 'sunglasses day' or another similar themed day are also good; everyone pays $2 to wear a hat and the most creative get a prize. Running competitions for students at lunchtimes also works well.. students pay a small amount to enter and the winner gets a small prize. Hope some of these helped :)
2 :
$11,000 is a lot of money. Doing fund-raising activities, such as those that have been mentioned before, are good, and you should do them if you can, but they aren't going to raise as much as you need. Put together a formal written proposal, showing the budget for the entire trip, how much your own family will be putting forth for the trip, etc. Detail about why this event is important, what the results of your participation will be, what you will commit to do AFTER the event back in South Africa, etc. Also, have an administrator for the funds -- what person or organization is to receive donations, and how will this person or organization ensure that money is spent appropriately? Assure donors that, if you do not raise the full amount and, therefore, cannot go, all donations will be returned. And offer a list of references -- community leaders, teachers, etc. and their contact information -- willing to affirm your group's credibility. Also, make this document available to all of your communities of faith to which you belong (churches and mosques). They *may* solicit donations on behalf of your group as well. Have an adult review this proposal and make sure that it looks appropriate and well-put-together. Then, call major companies in your area and ask to whom you would send a funding proposal at the organization. Or send it directly to the CEO of such. Also, issue a press release to local newspapers and radio stations at this same time, announcing this fund raising drive, the importance of your group's participation, what you hope to accomplish, what you will bring back to your communities as a result, etc. You could do a web site as well, highlighting all of this. If social networking is big in your area, such as MySpace, create a profile specifically for your group, with all of the aforementioned details, and ask all of your friends to link to it. Your goal is to raise the profile of your group locally. If you engage in the kinds of activities talked about in the other post, that may not raise as much money, but it will raise your profile, which could raise money in the long run.

1. Go to a beach. Cape Town has many beautiful beaches. And they're all free. Try Clifton or Camps Bay. 2. Go hiking. You can hike up Table Mountain from Kirstenbosch botanical gardens for not much. I'd advise you to go with someone that knows the route though. 3. Visit Cape Point, the southern most point of the Cape peninsula. It's cheap, and a spectacular site. 4. Go see the penguins in Simon's Town. 5. Visit the Gardens in the centre of the city. There are a few interesting museums around there, and they're all cheap. 6. You'll probably find that South Africa is quite cheap, especially restaurants and alcohol. So go out and enjoy yourself. Try and meet some locals and go with them, they'll show you the cheap non-touristy places.

I agree wit Rbarryza - Muizenburg has a lovely beach with very little surf, and feeding the squirrels and doves in the Company Gardens is fun, and it's beautiful there, there is also a few flea markets, and you can window shop at the Waterfront for hours, if you like antiques a walk down Longstreet is a must, and do hike to the top of Table Mountain, the view is spectacular - enjoy your stay in the gem of South Africa

Get some money! You'll need money for transport and to stay somewhere. Sleeping out in the open is no go.

Most fun country for an American foreign exchange student?
Keep in mind: I'm underage (16), but outgoing, mature, speak English, have taken two years of French, willing to learn a new language, and am globally informed (not ignorant to what's going on). I'm looking to have fun as well as experience a great culture. So, in your opinion, whether you live there or have just visited the place. Which country (of the following) would you suggest for me, a teenage American foreign exchange student, to have the best time in: France Ireland Australia Brazil South Africa

I would love to agree with you but there is not enough room up your arse for two heads.
2 :
He he, nobody has killed us yet. I love this country because nobody has killed me yet?! Tertiary education - you do realise that most degrees offered in SA now require bridging exams in foreign English speaking countries. And considering the brain drain this should always be a major consideration... Medicinal support - you mean the expensive paid private one? Public SA hospitals are not what they used to be, to put it mildly... Low rates compared to Europe?! Compared to what? Actually, I can stay in some pretty decent 4 star hotels in Europe for a lot less than what I would pay in SA. I can grocery shop for less in Europe as well - LIDL Germany, DIA - Spain, even Tesco in the UK has cheaper groceries than the SA equivalent. Beautiful SA women? You clearly need to travel more. SA has good weather (minus the wind in Cape Town), wine (although quite expensive now), meat (also pricey) and let's leave it at that.

You're right, there's lots to love about this country, the weather, sunsets, warm beaches,thunderstorms.....and the people. We live in unique country. And to all those who choose to see the negative, who complain and do nothing about the change you want to see..... leave!!! You more than free to.
9 :
MOst people here mostly expats, so they make SA look very bad so they'll feel better.
10 :
Well I can say that africa is great the people give you a warm welcome even in the township areas there food is great and if you love animals it is a must to do kind of holiday because you get to go on a 4 by 4 up close to them and when you come home you will never go back to a zoo !! I have been to South Africa twice both times in Sept when the weather has been good. You could say I LOVE the place and yes I would go back Big Time I went with Thomas Cook.
11 :
Yeah this could be a great country if malema and terreblanche didnt exist. LOVE boerewors and biltong

Transfering money (wiring) to south africa, help!!!?

Transfering money (wiring) to south africa, help!!!?
The money did not go through so I believe I did something wrong. For Beneficiary Name is that the person's name I'm sending it too, or is that the branch name. Beneficiary Bank Name: I think is ABSA, but my friend gave me PES Bureau (Port Elizabeth Student Bureau). For the student bureau I tried to look it up on the south african website but I can't find it. Is it a bank all by itself or is suppose to be in the Beneficiary's Name section. Please let me know fellow south africans or whom every can help me!!!!!

1 :
Good luck with that, I tried to send money to a kenyan bank, it never did work!
2 :
The beneficiary name will be the name of the person that must receive the funds not the bank. The beneficiary should have given you an account number and then the bank code centre number.....normally an account number and the name of the bank is sufficient. I am not aware of a PES Bureau, it could be the branch of the bank ABSA. To effect a transfer you will need the name of the beneficiary, his/her bank account number, the bank name and bank code (not essential). Hopefully this helps.
3 :
Beneficiary name, is the name of the person or organisation's name that you are sending the money to. ABSA is the name of a SA bank. You will need the branch code of the bank at which the person you are sending the money to has an account at, you will also needs the person's account number.

Me and a group of students from Sudan are headed to South Africa for about a week, the week before christmas.?
We will be representing our country during a conference... We are very excited.. We want to know on how to get the best flight deals. Our business is in Durban so we thought of flying to Johannesburg then take a bus to Durban (7 hour trip, $35, but the views will compensate).. Also how expensive is it for shopping and stuff, how much cash would we need (accomodation, food and transport covered)?? And if we decided to stay longer for Christmas or new year's, where do you recommend we go and what to attend? And one more: is it expensive to get around from one city to another via bus or train (as in $50 per ticket max) and to stay in hotels or hostels? Thank you in advance :) **Accomodation, food and transport are covered by our host
South Africa - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
You may want to book in advance. Durban is a popular local destination over the Christmas period. You may even have trouble getting bus tickets from JHB to DBN. You can also expect to pay peak fares for both your plane, bus and Accommodation. I suggest you contact your hosts for more advice. Good luck with you conference. As a reference: Fast food is about R 35-00 per meal. McDonald's Big Mac is about R20-00 (regular/smaller than the American regular) Public transport requires local knowledge and is poor. Car hire with insurance assuming you have a driver that is old enough and is happy driving on the left hand side of the road is around R250-00 to R350-00 a day. Private Taxis are too expensive to mention. They are around the same price as a London cab in London, Up to R15-00 per kilometer plus a flag fee. 1USD is around R6.75 Hope this helps you.
2 :
Dorm rooms in a hostel will cost you between R70 and R150 per night. The cheapest hotel accommodation is the Formule 1 (it has branches all over the country) - it is a bit tacky, but it costs about R300-R400 per room of 3 beds. You will be arriving in peak season, so the sooner you book beds and transport, the better. Try http://www.hostels.com/en/za.html or http://www.hostelworld.com to book online. You can check for flight specials on http://www.kulula.com http://www.1time.co.za or http://www.flymango.com At this time of year, budget plane tickets start at R600 one way, so your best bet is probably bus or train. Shosholoza Meyl runs an overnight train between Jhb and Durban. Tickets cost about R300 for second class. This gives you a private compartment that sleeps six people, so it reduces your acccommodation costs, too. But the trains are fully booked quite early into the season, so call asap. The number is +27 11 774 4555. Bus travel costs between R200 and R500, depending on the company and whether you catch the specials. It can be miserable to travel overnight, as people are crammed in like sardines (especially on SA Roadlink). An exception is Intercape's Sleepliner buses, where the seats recline really far back. Otherwise, travelling in the day should be fine. They sell tea and coffee on the bus, and there are toilets. The most comfortable are Greyhound and Intercape. Avoid City2City: the buses have been known to break down. You can make bookings online at http://www.greyhound.co.za http://www.intercape.co.za or http://www.saroadlink.co.za Public transport is cheap, but not very regular. For Joburg bus timetables, call +27 11 375 5555 or download it at http://www.mbus.co.za For New Year's day, I recommend either a beach party in Durban or the party in Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Jhb. I'm not a big fan of New Year's parties, but the party in MFS has bands throughout the night and is very safe. For local entertainment listings, look at the weekend section of the Mail and Guardian newspaper - it covers pretty much all events, and makes recommendations. In terms of shopping, it really depends on what you want to buy. If you're looking for small souvenirs and snacks only, R100 a day should be fine - but bring more if you can. Prices are very different, depending on whether you go bargain-hunting or boutique shopping. Bargain jeans can cost R100, but boutique jeans R1000. Entry into clubs can vary from R30 to R200. Enjoy the trip and take lots of pictures!

International student help!?

International student help!?
I am an international student from south africa. I have been in the US studying and i don't know how i have made it this far. I cant seem to find help anywhere. My sponsors dropped me so i have been trying to make it on my own. i have a social but still cant get a student loan b/c i am an international student i cant apply for financial aid. There has to be something i can do? is there any way to get off my student visa and perhaps work or anyway i can get a student loan??? i need help soon i am running out of time. My parents cant help back in SA i am on my own. I just don't understand how i cant find any options. any advice would be amazing. thank you

Here are two ideas: You may be able to qualify for scholarships and grants. Try fastweb.com . It takes a while to fill in the form and get started, but it can help a lot. You should consult a student counselor at your college or university. Ask for the financial aid office. They're used to this type of situation.
2 :
contact the american embassy!
3 :
Work some jobs that pay cash and keep in contact with school advisors. Someone there has answers, you have to be aggressive with them to get where you want.
4 :
i dont know how the law is in the states for IS, maybe they will allow you to work on campus or you can do an internship depending on the program you are taking in school... In canada if you are an int student you ar allowed to work up to 25 hours a week, so you can have both a student visa and working visa.. but you need to look in USA immigration website and check what the restrictions are..you can always try to work under the table for cash..tehy wont pay much but at least is something...maybe try some south african restaurants..try to find people from SA in your community and they might give you some info and some resources... good luck.
5 :
You need to talk to your advisors at your school. They will have or find resources for you. It's their job to help you and they should have extra staff just for internationals. When I went abroad, I had problems and the staff at the school always figured it out for me.
6 :
If you are under F-1 Visa, as you already know, your options are extremely limited. You do not qualify for any grants or loans that are partially or fully government sponsored. You are also not permitted to work EXCEPT for on-campus employment. This is why proof of fund is required for your F-1 Visa application. Here are few options: There are no restrictions for private grants. You might want to visit school's financial aid office and see if you qualify for any grants or loans that are sponsored by individuals, companies, or groups. You could also consider applying for hard-ship work permit. Your international student adviser should know how to do this. This is a temporary work permit for F-1 students in extra-ordinary situations. You could seek on-campus employment. On-campus employment are considered part of your education, and even F-1 students are NOT excluded. You could work as a lab assistant, teacher's aid, cafeteria, etc, etc, etc. There are classes that are essentially work-experience in your field. These classes may be called "Practical Training," "Work Experience," "Apprenticeship", etc. Basically, you work outside of school as part of your education. You get paid and your performance becomes your grade. Practical training is good for one year and renewable for 6 months more. Other types of work-study is usually good for duration of the term. It usually requires that you are near or at the end of your study program that you qualify for the field in question. It is nearly impossible to go from F-1 visa to anything else. INS is especially watchful for people who abuse F-1 privilege. (not saying you are one of them).
7 :
It will be very hard to be qualified to get scholarship or loans. I will suggest you that you talk to the international office at your school and explain the situation. If you face financial difficulities, you are allowed to work off campus also. However, since you are here as an international student, you have to pay a lot of money. So I am not sure off campus work will pay you enough to cover your expense. But, it is worth to try. Also you may ask your country's embassy in the US. OR look for another sponsor.
8 :
Student loans are meant to help students who are unable to bear their educational expenses. Student loans are different in different countries in the way they are devised, but then the common types of student loans available are the undergraduate loans, college student loans, private student loans and federal family educational loans. http://www.worldbestloans.com/student-loans.htm Student loan repayments are not made until the student completes his graduation. This facility helps him to concentrate on his studies and earn some little amount of money while he is studying, but repayment has to start once he finishes his education.

How can I become a legal resident in the USA?

How can I become a legal resident in the USA?
Hi all, I am currently an international student from South africa studying in florida, I have my f-1 student visa etc. How can i change my status to work, or get my green card? any info would be helpful! Thank-you
Immigration - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Go to uscis.gov. There are several ways. Probably the easiest is a bona-fide marriage to a US citizen, and that's not really super easy. Your question is really wide open. If you are trying to get a green card so you can get in-state tuition in Florida, forget it. That will not happen. If you are studying medicine or engineering and want to live in the US permanently, that could be a much different picture. The US makes it much easier for immigrants with skills that are badly needed. On the other hand, if you are studying world literature or philosophy or art history, um, not so easy. Now, as for the working thing - if you need to earn money to help pay a few bills while you are in school, you can apply for an employment authorization card. As long as you are still enrolled in school, you can work up to 20 hours a week while school is in session. Download form I-765 and the instructions will explain what you need to do to get the permit.
2 :
Permanent Residence can be obtained through petition of either immediate family member or employment by US Employer. http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_1326.html http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.eb1d4c2a3e5b9ac89243c6a7543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=4f719c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD&vgnextchannel=4f719c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD

You can apply, But its sure to be rejected. They don't know who you are, and no references from your Government supporting the fact that your not a criminal and just a student. The UK is very strict on these things since we`re scared of people. Haha. What I would do is go back to South Africa, and apply from there. It will maximize your chances of getting into the UK. Good luck friend :)
2 :
The site below is the official website for everything to do with travelling and working to the United Kingdom. It will tell you if you need a visa and if you do how to apply for one. http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk You have to answer a short questionnaire. 1. The purpose of your visit. 2.Country of nationality. 3.Current location. and all the relevant information will then be given.
3 :
South Africa is a Commonwealth country and its citizens do not need a visa to visit the United Kingdom as general visitor for up to six month. If you plan to stay longer or for other reasons you will need a visa. You must apply from your place of citizenship or residency. If you should hold a long term F-1 student visa and hold a residency in the US you may apply from the United States. If you just hold a I-94 for 180 days or less you should better do the application from your home country. Source(s): http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoapply/infs/inf5students#Q4

Working holiday USA (South African citizen)?

Working holiday USA (South African citizen)?
I'm a law student from South Africa. I would love to go to the USA on a working holiday from mid-November 07' to mid-February 08'. Obviousy I would like to earn some dollars, and have a good time! There are many agencies through who you can organise it, but the fees are almost more than the airfare (which is allready a strech for me!) I've got some common sense, and I believe that I would be able to do most of the administrative stuff myself, but I would really appreciate any info on how to find a job over there without having to go through an agency.

There isn't a lot of time between now and November, given that you need a work visa and it has to be sponsored. Do check wil USA companies in SA and SA companies with offices in the USA to see if they have any opportunities. However, your best bet is probably DisneyWorld (in Florida). Go to http://disney.go.com/disneycareers/wdwcareers/international/index.html for more information. Good luck!

You need to submit transcripts, SAT scores, TOEFL scores, and letters of recommendation. You'll need to apply in December to start the following September. Harvard admits fewer than 6% of applicants - you really need to find a way to stand out. If they only accept one student from your country, is it going to be you?
2 :
It is extremely difficult to get into Harvard. It is a very selective private university and does not accept all applicants -- not even close. However, the best way to start, to demonstrate that you have initiative and interest, is to make your inquiries at Harvard itself. Since you are already 21, you may be talking about postgraduate study in a specific field rather than earning an undergraduate degree. I'm giving you the Harvard website, and if you are hoping to apply to earn an undergraduate degree, then you should click on "Admissions and Aid" at the top right. You should be given a way to contact the Admissions Office among other information. If your hope is to apply to earn a postgraduate degree in a specific field, then you will need to locate the school or department on the site and contact it directly. Click on "Schools".

Pretoria isnt really than hectic when it comes to crime and such but i dont know of any good places you could stay. Try gumtree.co.za there will be some postings for flats avalible.
2 :
The area in Villeria and Wonderboom South is relatively quiet but unless you have transport you should stay on a bus route. Sunnyside is not to far but not very safe and Berea might be a bit expensive for a student - Google SA, Pretoria and i am sure you will find suitable accommodation I live in Pretoria SA

If you don't have transport - try to find accomodation in Hatfield. It's walking distance from UP and there are alot of apartments built for this specific reason. Otherwise - you can try to get into contact with someone that rents out a room in a commune. It's cheap and safer because you won't be living alone.

I am a mere teen so I cannot provide you with much information. And you may need to research a few backgrounds But I use to live in Auckland. It’s a great place it really is. But then again. The air pollution is something uh troubling… I generally prefer Auckland, maybe I’m biased. But It’s like the Sydney of Australia. Or the Los Angeles of America. The most ACTIVE city. Sure, Canberra, Washington DC, and Wellington are capitols. But it’s not the most ACTIVE and generally speaking… good(?) or the most involved in other … stuff. Do you get what I’m saying? It’s like the City that’s alive. And contains the most ‘privileges’

Auckland is a city with many people of different nationalities, but it is also the biggest city in NZ. It has the most opportunities work wise but the housing up there is so expensive its ridiculous. There are many other smaller cities and towns around NZ that also have a lot of work opportunities. I would check out www.seek.co.nz it is an employment website or www.trademe.co.nz where you can also find employment and rental properties. NZ is really a great place to live and is considerably safer than many other countries in the world. Good Luck!

What am i supposed to do in such a situation good people?

What am i supposed to do in such a situation good people?
My girlfriend of almost two years and I are students in South Africa. She is from TZ and i'm form Kenya. This is our final year year in Varsity and after this i intend to stay here but she wants to go back to Tz because she hates this country. How do i convince her to stay behind ? The only reason i can't leave is because i'm an actuarial student and if i want to progress in my career then i have to be in South Africa or abroad because the rest of Africa looks up to South Africa Actuarial wise.

Give her the pros and cons of moving out or staying but never decide for her. If you love someone you have to set her free.
2 :
If she hates it there she will probably never really be happy even if she choses to stay there with you. If you really love her its up to you to make the sacrifice, and if the sacrifice is not worth making than maybe its for the best if she leaves.
3 :
I can understand you and her. You have to stay so you can have a good job and make progress and want her to stay because she loves you. And she probably doesn't liek the country and doesn't want to be there any more than necessary. I don't know what the two of you should do. You can't force her to stay somewhere she doesn't want to stay and she should consider staying if she loves you. I mean, it's easier to live somewhere you don't want to live with someone you love then the opposite.
4 :
Are you saying that your (potential) career is more important than the woman you so deeply love? Take a deep breath, and book a flight to anywhere. South Africa sucks anyway. Lots better places to forge your future.
5 :
This is a chance to see how stable your relationship. First, if she wants to go back, let her go. Second, if you see that the best way for you to succeed is to stay, you have to stay. If she will choose to stay, she will regret that she did not try her way. If you will choose to leave, you will always think about your lost options. If she doesn't want to stay, she is not ready to sacrifice her life for you. Something wrong in this relationship. Do you think she is really a good match? Let her go and time will decide everything. May be she will change her mind when you and her will be apart...
6 :
tough one, remember you cannot make her do anything she doesnt want to do. but if its true love you should be okay because when in love we all make sacrifices to keep it going. just my opinion
