Should teachers in South Africa be given the right to arm themselves in school?
Township teachers in South Africa are demanding guns to protect themselves against hoodlums and students. What's your take on this?

What, so they can shoot the students back? So they can have gun fights in the playground? They are treating the situation incorrectly. Guns, i.e. violence, are not the solution, it would just cause more hatred and violence. If teachers have guns, they are actually saying that they accept violence as a solution to any problem. These kids have been brought up in a violent enviroment, I think the solution would be to teach them that there is another way of life out there. Maybe we send them to boarding schools, like Boys Town? That would at least remove them from their enviroment. Once again, it comes down to the government not paying enough attention to our children and their education. Brad & Great Blistering Barnacles: Why are you blaming liberation? It had to happen, and in of itself is a good thing. Yes, it's stupid to place liberation before education, they should be implemented at the same time, but please, give liberty a break.

yes. if they are threatened by a teen gangster with a gun, they should be able to pop a cap in his @ss as punishment....

This is not a question that I thought I would answer 20 years ago when I went to school. Hectic!! Our idea of speaking out against the establishment was .... well nothing. We didnĂ‚´t dare! 6 cuts in the principleĂ‚´s office was not my idea of fun, and besides if we were to be expelled it would put our parents in quite a predicament, as we could only go to schools in our residential zones. The alternative would then be to go to a technical school and lose the possibility of a university or technikon entrance. What happened to the respect for school and the teachers? Certainly a system whereby teachers are allowed to carry weapons can not work, especially when according to some surveys done teachers are responsible for a lot of the rapes that occur in the schools already. A short term solution is that students should only be able to enter the school through secured entrances with weapons checks. And the longer term solution is education at home and especially at beginner school about respect for your fellow man, his possessions and the laws and system of the (hopefully honest) authority in place.

Thats ridiculous!!! Guns cause more problems than they solve... Why cant security be upped at schools? Townships I'm sure have police stations and the SAPS could work hand in hand with schools to stop this...

Perhaps you are just indicating the sorry state of affairs South Africa has become. It is incomprehensible for a civilised Society to contemplate armed Teachers in the classroom and if they are at risk then just what are the pupils exposed to. There have already been a number of murders in SA schools over the last few months as well as some horrific assaults. It is well known that drug dealers hang around schools and have their own distributors on the playgrounds. It is horrendous what is happening to South African school kids and one can only wonder what the next generation of Adults will be like.

it's not really right to be armed at school but regarding the crime rate. anyways, as long as they're allowed to do it there will never be peace!

would you also suggest that since 2006 there were about 10 shooting incidence in some schools in US especially in high schools,so students and teachers should be allowed to take arms to school?????????????????

Ah...the sweet sound of liberation from those white bastards! Power to the people! Amandla Awetu! They got the paradise they wanted. This is what the struggle was all about, isn't it?

Kick the hoodlums out of school. Stop treating them like human beings because they clearly cannot relate to anyone in a civilized manner. This is what you get when you choose liberation before education, why does everyone seem surprised?

Being a student myself I think it would be appropriate at times. Teachers face a lot of abuse from students and there is nothing hey can do. The DoE protects students too much by coming up with all sorts of formalities in order to get a kid kicked out of school. Some parents are to blame because when kids misbehave, they stick up for them. It is absolute rubbish!
