Does anyone have successful fund-raising ideas? Or do you know any companies willing to sponsor us?
A group of grade 11 students from South Africa want to go to the St Andrew's Model United Nations (SAIMUN) conference in Dublin, Ireland next year in March. However, we need help in terms of funding. Its about $11000 for the 7 seven students. Flight and accomodation is included.

You could maybe hold a charity ball, where the guests have to pay for dinner.. You could also talk to rotary or unicef or something like that about donations. Other ideas i thought of were applying for a grant, door knocking, sponsership for a certain sport ie fun runs.
2 :
Quizz nights Dessert evenings Sell kindling Raffles Suporvised dance for teenagers Car washes Auction Sausage sizzles If the school is envolved as well you could add Mufti days if the school has a uniform Coin trails Here in New Zealand there are companies set up to help people fundraise. As in they only sell to people who are fundraising, things such as chocolates, pies, dairys/books. Maybe get in touch with groups like Rotary or JCIs if you have them in your community. If they can't sponser you they should at least have some suggestions as to what you can do.

I don't know what you have regarding your community based programs or events. I'll throw out some ideas. First off please be clear and answer the Who, What, Where, When, and Why questions in letters or posters. Advertise- The kids can make posters for donations. Write letters to officials and City Council or Mayor asking for sponsorship. Go to community events and set up a booth to sell food. Create a talent show, Dinner Night Out or sell handcrafts. As a volunteer coordinator I had the high "schoolers" do all the work for something like this by pooling their talents together. I wrote business owners requesting products like for our Teriyaki booth. They supplied rice, meat, and soy sauce. I checked everywhere to put the kids to work and taught them how to do various projects. They couldn't clean yards because of personal property. Ask the kids and others for fund raising ideas in your area. They worked hard and I was so proud. They were also proud and still think about the experiences with me even after graduating from college. When I think of projects and young people it makes me happy. Good luck to you and your kids.

What are the benefits of them going? How much does it cost both in terms of money and environmental damage with all that air travel. What are the real benefits for the wider community. Much of the United Nations is more about benefits for those working there and doing well paid jobs working for consultancies that "implement" aid projects, leaving little money to go for any tangible change Yesterday the BBC had a programme World Have Your Say where one of the ex prostitutes was saying, - the last thing we need is yet another work shop or re education programme. put the money directly in our pockets. There is a link below According to The Economist,. Save the Children recently asked some beneficiaries of one of their programmes and realised that what the victims of a disaster needed more than anything was money, not training, not wells, just cash, so that they could go on line to find loved ones, buy tickets home. Apparently they agreed (though I couldn't find any detials on their web site. What have these students done already ? The more they can demonstrate their own commitment and energy, the more likely like business guy will think, they deserve a bit of help? and send them some cash Having said that, for all I know this a great project. Many of the other answers give lots of info and good practical tips Congrats for trying to help them. Are you a member of the group or their teacher, parent, friend ? Make sure the others get to see the answers here. It should make them realise that someone has to make an effort (and it should be them) - if its you, just send em a link to this page

I enjoyed the time I spent in Australia. I expect that any of the countries would be a wonderful place to spend a year. However you need to know that high school in these places will be much tougher than what you are accustomed to in the U.S. (assuming that is where you are).

I would go to England

As you did not state where and what degree you are reading now, you might want to consider an exchange programme with a uni from another part of the world (assuming you are from the states) like Asia and Aussie. Reasons -This will give you a "global perspective" in your studies. -According to my friends from the States (contacts from work), large majority of Americans do not travel out of USA although USA seem to be spearheading globalization – Only some of the key business people travel. Hence, this might give you an edge in the job market upon graduation. Some of the recommendations (I only recommend those with very good international standing and those I am familiar with) for exchange in Asia/ Australia: Singapore: National University of Singapore: http://www.nus.edu.sg/ Nanyang Technological University: www.ntu.edu.sg Hong Kong/China: The Chinese University of Hong Kong: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/v6/en/ Australia: Any universities from the Grp of 8 (the unofficial TOP 8 universities in Aussie): http://www.go8.edu.au/ Note: I do not know which faculty you are from – hence, I only listed the universities with good overall standing – overlooking the respective faculty strength. If you prefer fast pace city life – choose Singapore (1st Lang in Singapore is English – almost everyone can speak English) or HK (1st Lang is Cantonese, but quite a fair bit of people there speaks English as well) If you prefer slower pace of life – choose Aussie . Hope this helps.

Student taking off a year to live in a different continent?

Student taking off a year to live in a different continent?
I've heard it's dirt cheap to live in places such as India and Thailand. I'm in highschool now, but when I get there, I'm interested in taking off a year from either college or grad school and I would really love to live in Africa. Do you know if Africa is inexpensive to live in? Particularly South Africa or Egypt. Thanks for your help! Please e-mail me if you have any more information or advice - christineeex4@yahoo.com

Go to Africa its cheap

Africa is generally very cheap. Just do research on what area you plan on visiting, some areas require special shots and/or medication.

Africa is Not really a good place for a girl alone, Neither is most of the world. Perhaps a good program interning for a Charity or Wildlife group would give you some other folks your age to travel with. Now that you have posted your email address, you will no doubt find out Why the world is a dangerous place for a single young girl to travel. Safety is a great skill to learn if you want to travel.

For Year 11 students, having a 'talent' auction is good; instead of selling actual objects, each person or group of students comes up with a unique idea/service that they can sell; celebrity chefs, music performers, lessons in a certain skill, or just plain old housework. Then get your local community to come and purchase your skills! Or you could have a fundraising performance; if you are good at music have a 'Battle of the Bands' competition, or get your community to come to a survival of the fittest night where each student has to undertake funny tasks. Think up your own skills and play to them. Teacher versus student sporting matches are good in schools; your group can compete against a group of teachers who will help, and other students can pay to watch. Disco's are also great at lunchtimes in schools. Same with sausage sizzles and cake stalls. They may only make a few hundred dollars, but they are great for a little on the side project. Having a 'hat day' or 'sunglasses day' or another similar themed day are also good; everyone pays $2 to wear a hat and the most creative get a prize. Running competitions for students at lunchtimes also works well.. students pay a small amount to enter and the winner gets a small prize. Hope some of these helped :)

$11,000 is a lot of money. Doing fund-raising activities, such as those that have been mentioned before, are good, and you should do them if you can, but they aren't going to raise as much as you need. Put together a formal written proposal, showing the budget for the entire trip, how much your own family will be putting forth for the trip, etc. Detail about why this event is important, what the results of your participation will be, what you will commit to do AFTER the event back in South Africa, etc. Also, have an administrator for the funds -- what person or organization is to receive donations, and how will this person or organization ensure that money is spent appropriately? Assure donors that, if you do not raise the full amount and, therefore, cannot go, all donations will be returned. And offer a list of references -- community leaders, teachers, etc. and their contact information -- willing to affirm your group's credibility. Also, make this document available to all of your communities of faith to which you belong (churches and mosques). They *may* solicit donations on behalf of your group as well. Have an adult review this proposal and make sure that it looks appropriate and well-put-together. Then, call major companies in your area and ask to whom you would send a funding proposal at the organization. Or send it directly to the CEO of such. Also, issue a press release to local newspapers and radio stations at this same time, announcing this fund raising drive, the importance of your group's participation, what you hope to accomplish, what you will bring back to your communities as a result, etc. You could do a web site as well, highlighting all of this. If social networking is big in your area, such as MySpace, create a profile specifically for your group, with all of the aforementioned details, and ask all of your friends to link to it. Your goal is to raise the profile of your group locally. If you engage in the kinds of activities talked about in the other post, that may not raise as much money, but it will raise your profile, which could raise money in the long run.
